Aviation Weather Services

Weather is one of the greatest hazards to aviation. Correct and timely weather information provided by the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services (DCCMS) is very crucial in serving life safety. We advise all sectors of the industry to help the aviation industry increase safety and achieve operational efficiencies and cost savings.

DCCMS has the responsibility to provide weather information to Aviation in accordance with the International standards and recommended practices set out in Annex 3 to the convention on International Civil Aviation published by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Amongst the services provided are;

  • Keeps meteorological watch -over the Flight Information Region for Department of Civil Aviation in Malawi.
  • Weather report to Air Traffic Control (ATC)
  • Aerial weather summary for rescue and search operations
  • Terminal Aerodrome, Enroute and Destination Weather Forecasts & Trends
  • Briefing of Pilots & Airmen on expected weather at various points
  • Prognostic weather charts
  • Provision of sigmet (Kamuzu International Airport)
  • Sending synops worldwide through AFTN (Aeronautical Fixed Telecommunication Network) and GTS (Kamuzu International Airport)

Kamuzu International Airport (IATA: LLW, ICAO: FWKI)

The airport is in Lilongwe, the capital city of Malawi. It is also known as Lilongwe International Airport.The airport was built in 1977 by the Nello, taking over most airliner operations from Old Lilongwe Airport (FWLE) some 6km west of the city Centre. It is owned by Airport Developments Limited. The airport is at an elevation of 4,035 feet (1,230m) above mean sea level. It has one runway designated 14/32 with an asphalt surface measuring 3,540 by 45 meters (11,614ft נ148ft).

Chileka International Airport (IATA: BLZ, ICAO: FWCL)

The airport is located 16km from Blantyre, the second largest city in the Republic of Malawi and the commercial Capital of Malawi's Southern Region.The airport resides at an elevation of 2,555 feet (779m) above mean sea level. It has two asphalt paved runways: 10/28 measures 2,325 by 30 meters (7,628ft נ98ft) and 15/33 measures 1,372m נ30m (4,501ft נ98ft). The airport underwent some major improvements to the terminals. Extension of the runways has been suspended due to lack of space & funds. Chileka Airport
